Become a Volunteer

The New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance is always looking for volunteers to join our team and serve our communities.  We have five levels of membership: EMT, Emergency Medical Responder, Driver, Explorer, and Observer.

Emergency Medical Technicians

EMT members ride on the ambulance and participate in Emergency Medical calls. As a Basic Life Support Service, all of our primary crews consist of at least one EMT and one EMR. All EMT members are required to do at least one 12-hour duty shift per month. Many of our EMT's are also designated first responders who are issued a full medical kit and AED so they can quickly respnd to emergency in their area.

Emergency Medical Responder

EMR members ride on the ambulance and participate in Emergency Medical calls. All EMR's are required to do at least one 12-hour duty shift per month. Many of our EMR members go on to earn their EMT certificates. You need to be at least 14 years old to earn your EMR.

Driver

Driver's are an integral part of our emergency response system. NHVA driver's are trained in the safe operation of emergency vehicles and ensure the safety of our staff and patients during transport. A driver on a shift allows all our EMT's and EMR's to be in the back treating patients. Drivers must be 18 years of age and are required to do at least one 12-hour duty shift per month.

Observer

Observers are members who are in the process of earning a certificate. Observers ride on the ambulance and observe medical care to enhance their learning.

Explorer

The New Hartford Volunteer Ambulance Squad boasts one of the oldest explorer programs in the area.  High school students who are at least fourteen years of age are eligible to join the NHVA Explorer Post. NHVA Explorers are sponsored through the Boy Scouts of America. Explorers can assist in emergency calls if they are 15 years of age or older. Explorers are expected to attend training sessions, participate in Explorersmeetings and NHVA activities, and serve on at least one 12-hour duty shift per month. Most Explorers have earned or are in the process of earning their EMR or EMT certificates.
